Publications by Blue Knot Foundation

Lived experience, research and practice-based evidence is key to all our work. All of Blue Knot Foundation’s publications are grounded in cutting edge research. Our nationally and internationally acclaimed publications influence policy, guide best practice and support changing attitudes and culture.

See below to access our extensive array of Practice Guidelines for practitioners, supervisors and workers in organisations and a number of substantial reports. Also see our Talking about Trauma series which speaks to the general public, practitioners and services and GPs.

In 2012 Blue Knot Foundation launched our Practice Guidelines for Treatment of Complex Trauma and Trauma Informed Care and Service Delivery.

The publication was highly endorsed and acclaimed by clinicians, researchers, academics and people with a lived experience of complex trauma alike. Downloaded tens of thousands of times the 2012 guidelines still stand and provide a helpful introductory guide for practitioners who are new to this work.

Between 2012 and 2019 the clinical and research evidence around working clinically with complex trauma, including dissociation has exploded. This has necessitated the development of our 2019 updated Practice Guidelines for Clinical Treatment of Complex Trauma. Again these guidelines have been extensively endorsed and acclaimed by global leaders in the complex trauma and dissociation field prior to their release – ‘truly remarkable – masterful – ground-breaking – milestone’. They provide an integrative guide for diverse practitioners working with complex trauma and dissociative clients.

In addition, we produced a companion guide to the 2019 Guidelines, a combined set of Complementary Guidelines which provides an overview of the differences between working with complex trauma clients and standard counselling approaches as well as a guide to therapist competencies for working with complex trauma and dissociation.

We followed the clinical guidelines with two sets of specialist clinical guidelines, Practice Guidelines for Identifying and Working with Trauma-related Dissociation and the other Guidelines for Clinical Supervisors of Therapists who Work with Complex Trauma and Dissociation.

In 2021 both the Organisational Guidelines for Trauma-Informed Service Delivery and the Disability Guidelines: Guidelines for Trauma Informed Practice: Supporting people with disability who have experienced complex trauma and Plain English Guide: Supporting people with disability who have experienced complex trauma were launched offering further insights into the application of trauma informed practice.
